Where to buy in Chingford

September 29th, 2008 by | Filed under Chingford.

Chingford was an Anglo-Saxon settlement originally.  Farming and fishing were carried on here in mediaeval times.  It was part of a royal deer park in Tudor times, and Queen Elizabeth had a hunting lodge there.  After the great Eastern Railway came through the area in the 1870s, much of the area was developed for housing, but the Epping Forest Act ensured that much of the forest was retained.  The marshland on the Lea River was reclaimed for use as reservoirs in the early 20th century..

Chingford is close to Epping Forest and is popular as a residential area. The most upmarket part is around the Ridgeway. Houses near to Epping Forest itself are the most highly desirable. This is the area of Chingford Green. Below Hatch Lane, Highams Park contains attractive houses from the Victorian era through to the 1930s. Another popular area is the Palace View estate close to Larkswood, which contains early 20th century semi-detached houses.
