Where to buy in Hendon

September 29th, 2008 by | Filed under Hendon.

The Manor of Hendon was land belonging to Westminster Abbey at the time of the Norman conquest. David Garrick, the Shakespearean actor of the 18th century, owned the manor at one time. He also owned Hendon Hall which is now the Hendon Hall Hotel. Hendon Aerodrome was famous before the War for aircraft production.

The Burroughs, which turns into Church Road, is the main road through Hendon. The Burroughs itself contains attractive large houses, often converted into flats, and smaller cottages. The most sought-after location in Hendon is Brampton Grove which is a turning off the Burroughs. Wykeham Road and Raleigh Close to the south have similarly large family houses. Brent Street to the east has council blocks, mainly now in private ownership. Bell Lane runs east off it and there are medium-sized family homes in Alexandra Road and Albert Road, with larger houses in Green Lane. The Shirehall Estate - streets off Shirehall Lane - which is south of Brent Street have views over Hendon Park. North of Church Road and the Burroughs, streets running up to Sunningfields Road and Sunningfields Crescent contain family homes and flat conversions. Very sought-after locations for expensive family homes are Downage, Ashley Lane and the Cedars Close off Parson Street. Nearby streets are also attractive, with smaller houses. On the other side of Hendon Way you are heading towards West Hendon. There are mansion blocks, such as the High Mount block, in this area and other flat conversions. The streets centred on Vivian Avenue mainly contain semi-detached houses. West Hendon is on the other side of the motorway. Welsh Harp village is the sought-after area here, with terraced houses and flats on streets such as Goldsmith Avenue.
