September 29th, 2008 by | Filed under Maida Vale.Maida Vale (the area) starts at Little Venice and goes east as far as Maida Vale (the street), beyond which it is St John’s Wood. The most sought after parts of Maida Vale are north of Shirland Road.
Warwick Avenue and Clifton Road and Gardens are the heart of traditional Maida Vale. Warwick Avenue contains Victorian mansions from the 1850s in white stucco, many still occupied as family homes. Clifton Gardens, built ten years later, is a wide street containing similar terraced houses, with stucco facades backing onto large gardens. There are attractive roads running off it to the north such as Castellain Road, Warrington Crescent and Randolph Crescent. Castellain Road contains Castellain Mansions, which is a large mansion block near Elgin Avenue. Warrington Crescent contains mainly flats but they have the benefit of particularly large communal gardens. Randolph Crescent is similar in building style and shares the triangular gardens on the east side. Sutherland Avenue, just above this area, is another wide street containing large houses with stucco facades.
Parallel to Sutherland Avenue further north is Elgin Avenue and this contains a number of red-brick mansion blocks, including Elgin Mansions. There are mews properties to be found in Elgin Mews North and South near Maida Vale station. Nearby Ashworth Road contains 1930s houses. The roads off Elgin Avenue further west such as Essendine Road Morshead Road and Wymering Road contain mansion blocks of flats.
On the east side of the Maida Vale area there are several roads running north to south parallel with Maida Vale itself. Randolph Avenue contains traditional Maida Vale property. There are large houses with stucco facades in terraces, as well as some semi-detached houses. At the south end three closes of townhouses were built in the 1960s called Elizabeth Close, Robert Close and Browning Close. There are more small houses in Randolph Mews nearby. Lanark Road contains council estates to the north and blocks of private flats to the south. The west side of Maida Vale contains an assortment of council estates (mainly in the north) and mansion blocks, such as Sandringham Court and Blomfield Court. On the borders of Maida Vale there are council estates on either side of Carlton Vale, and terraced properties in the streets towards Queens Park.
On the south side of Shirland Road, Maryland’s Road and surrounding streets are good locations for converted flats. Lauderdale Road and Elgin Avenue contain a number of mansion blocks.
