Bethnal Green history

September 28th, 2008 by | Filed under Bethnal Green.

I have been trying to find out where the name ‘Bethnal Green’ comes from, but I haven’t been able to find anything. Bethnal Green was the poorest district of London in Victorian times; workers lived there in appalling conditions, but ironically what the Bethnal Green workers were mainly doing was weaving silk clothes for the wealthy classes. Slum clearance took place in the 20th century but you have to wonder whether the large council estates created in Bethnal Green in their place were that much of an improvement. All that is left of old Bethnal Green is a few buildings around what was originally the mediaeval village green in the Bethnal Green Gardens conservation area. One other bit of interesting historical information: the Bethnal Green Underground station was the site of a terrible tragedy in 1943, when 173 people were killed during a panic at the entrance of the station during an air raid.
