Norbury history

September 30th, 2008 by | Filed under Norbury.

The Roman road, known as Stane Street, passed through what is now Norbury. One of the battles between the barons under Simon de Montfort and Henry III took place here in 1264. The Carew family owned the land from the mid-14th to the mid-19th centuries. The land was mainly agricultural. Thornton Heath nearby was a common frequented by many highwayman who attacked travellers in the 17th and 18th centuries. Development generally had to wait for the 20th century when trains were introduced from London to Thornton Heath. Many estates were built in the area between the world wars. The gardens of Mulberry Hall, formerly the home of the Carew family, were turned into Norbury Park.
