Where to buy in Newham

September 29th, 2008 by | No Comments | Filed in Newham

Newham now means a large area combining East Ham, West Ham, and parts of Woolwich. Originally, it meant Stratford and surrounding areas. In the 18th century the area was generally devoted to farming. Country houses began to be built in the area from the 17th century onwards. At the time, industry was mainly based in Stratford. The west and south of Newham gradually attracted industry from the mid-19 century. Between 1860 and 1900 the east and north of Newham was largely developed as housing for dock workers. Docklands were being developed throughout the 19th century and the Royal Docks were built in Newham: Victoria in 1855, Albert in 1880 and King George V in 1921. In 1844 the Metropolitan Buildings Act prevented the construction of dangerous or noxious industries in London itself, so manufacture of products like sulphuric acid and paint was moved out to areas such as Newham. Council building has been the main story of residential construction in the 20th century. It is the home of many council tower blocks. The infamous Ronan Point which collapsed in 1968 was one of its post-war council blocks.
